Reactionary Tales

Product Junkie

I was going through my morning routine this morning and realized that I have a ridiculous amount of hair and body products and I don’t even remember when I got half of them.

I’m the type of girl that is too cheap to pay for a salon to do my hair. I’ve probably walked into a salon maybe twice my whole life and both times, all the stylists wanted to do is straighten my hair.

I’m not a fan.

My natural, curly Afro locks were not made to be straight and the times I would straighten my hair, the style would last about a day. Would take an entire day to get beautiful, only for a drop of humidity to hit it and poof back to it’s natural state. I’ve experimented with a few different types of products trying to find a good, moisturizing combination. I’m also a sucker for a good deal. For example, last week when I took my husband to get his eye drop prescription after his eye surgery, I saw some Dove shampoo/conditioner on sale 2 for $8. I don’t even use Dove shampoo or conditioner but I bought it anyway cause it was a good deal and they smelled good! I rationalized that you never know when you’ll need a 2 in 1 shampoo even though I already have plenty of bottles at home.

I also buy a lot of body products like lotions, body washes and scrubs. I also get gifted these types of things if I show any interest in them. For example, a friend of mine gifted me with a grapefruit sugar scrub, a tea tree salt scrub and a tea tree body butter from Bath and Body Works because we walked in their store one day and the retail lady was all, ‘You MUST try this! This product will amaze you!” aka “spend lots of money right now please”.

Even though I have all these products and I don’t use them, I can’t bring myself to throw them away. I try not to be wasteful as much as possible so what I’ve resorted to is giving them away to people who come to visit. I end up asking them if they use this or that and maybe embellish a little about how great the products are (even if I only used them once) so they will take them out of my house. But then of course, I go to the store and buy some more if I see another deal or someone swearing by a product in a YouTube video.

Do you find yourself buying a lot of products even if you’ll never use them? What are those products? Are you like me and justify why you buy things you probably don’t need? Let me know in the comments below!

(For the record this DOES NOT apply to books. Books are the exception to the junkie law. There’s no disputing this.)

Lol, I’m like that with books, even though you said it doesn’t count, lol! I used to be like that with beauty products. I went to cosmetology school right out of high school and became obsessed with hair products, especially hair color and also nail polish. Umm, still nail polish! So, yeah. 😉 Heehee!

You are just full of surprises. Cosmetology school??? Yeah it’s hair and body products for me. I can’t resist good deals! I have one bottle of nail polish and it’s clear, haha. I’m not very girly unless I have to be.
Book can never count! It’s a good addiction to have I say 🙂

I’m not big on products, Nel! I used to be, but somewhere along the line, I became worried about what the hell we’ve been putting on our skin. I use olive or coconut oil for moisturizer and homemade soap (that I buy! I don’t make it myself!) Products I had in but didn’t want to waste I use for cleaning the toilet. I use vinegar first, then some bubble bath or whatever to make it smell pretty.

I’ve relaxed a bit over the years, it’s pretty hard to live chemical free but I try.

I agree. I went the sulfate free route for my hair and skin care products but for my hair in particular, it’s definitely hard to stay away from particular products when they work so well. I agree with you, it is hard to live chemical free but at least we try and these companies seem to change their formulas to gentler agents.

    Books must always be exceptions!

I rarely buy products. I step out of the shower and let my hair air dry. I’ll put a paste or gel in it maybe once every two weeks if I need to tame it. when I wash and shampoo it, the whole next 24 hours it is frizzy. So I try to shampoo every other day and condition twice a week. Body soap. Shaving cream. Face wash. That’s all!

That sounds about right. Men are definitely more simplified when it comes to products. One of my friend works at a discount store though and he has all kinds of products in his house cause they cost pennies for him! I help myself when I go over there sometimes hahaha

I have to admit that I have, many more times than once, Bought shampoo when I really needed conditioner and vice versa. Now you would think that it would all even out, but at any given time I either have 8 bottles of shampoo and I’m on the last bottle of conditioner or the other way around. It’s bad if you do it once and just have to buy one more bottle to even the score, but I make the wrong choice many times before I finally figure it out and then it’s like I’ve flipped a switch and go the other way. I need help Nel. Maybe if you come over some time I can give you soe shampoo…or wait..conditioner…oh hell, I don’t know anymore!

Hahahaha well I was always told for every bottle of shampoo you have, you should have two bottles of conditioner. So I think you’re doing it right some rounds 😝. I’d be happy to take some bottles off your hands. We really need that teleportation machine, I tell ya!

      1. mainepaperpusher

Sweetie, I think we need to figure out how to teleport our houses. That way we can bring the shampoo and conditioner bottles along with us. Hey we could even bring Zell and Bill along so they could have a little USPS/UPS shop talk. Gotta love a man in a uniform! 😉

I think I enjoyed the comments even more!! 😂
I think I’m guilty, hair oils and stuff. I am sure I have over 8 different types of natural oils for my hair, some of which are good for skin as well so I use em whenever. But you’re clearly a bigger mess than me 😀

Hahaha! I really am.this cabinet has 3 shelves in it and my products take up two! I have tons of hair oils too and gels. I mean it’s all in the combination! When I find the best one, I can, maybe, cut back 😀.
The comments are great! I love them all and it nice to know that ppl all over the world seem to relate.

My hair is crazy thick and frizzy so I stick with one type of shampoo and conditioner that I know will work..until it doesn’t anymore.. but I don’t buy extras for some reason. I should though since I’ve had to use my hubby’s 2 for 1 shampoo and conditioner last minute because I ran out! I have to use anti frizz lotion, oil, and spray and sometimes mousse to keep it from being a puff ball but I don’t buy extras of those either. All that stuff makes my bathroom counter look like it’s going to explode, lol. I’m a product junkie with lipstick. I see a lipstick and I buy it. Last count I had over 30 of them. I did have over 40 last month but tossed out the old. I’ll probably have 40 by the end of August. It’s an obsession! Oh and face wash or serums…I will buy and try a new one even though more than likely I’m just going to stick with the same brand I’ve been using for a while! I give away the facial stuff like you were talking about, lol.

    1. Nel Post author

Hahahaha! I’m glad I’m not the only one then! It’s so hard to not buy these things and you can’t go wrong with a variety of lipstick colors! There are 30-31 days in a month so you just have one maybe 2 for each day 😂

      1. Stephanie

No you aren’t!! The funny thing is that I always buy them in the same shades…plum, mauve, nude, brown lol!! But I do get different kinds…gloss, matte, satin, long lasting!! I did step outside the box the other day and get a red! Funny though out of all those colors I probably have 6 favorites! 🤣

hehe I do this- but I go through fads- so for instance there was a time when I was obsessed with nail varnish and just couldn’t resist every time I saw one in a different colour… it was a real problem! I did get a lot of use out of them when I used to paint my nails, but when I stopped doing it… well then I just had a lot of useless bottles crowding my space 😉 As for hair stuff, I often do homemade hair masks- which is probably weird for a lot of people, but it’s so cheap!- and then just use a really boring shampoo. I’m so rubbish at hair maintenance, but my sister has a gazillion products for her hair everywhere!

    1. Nel Post author

Home made hair masks?? Is there a post on this?? Cause I’m interested. Homemade would be so much cheaper and probably better than buying all gunk in stores, haha.

      1. theorangutanlibrarian

hehe yes!! Well I was really into natural stuff- so I was looking at lush products, but couldn’t afford them, so I looked at the ingredients and was like… huh I could do that. It works really well! You can do ones based in coconut oil, or I tend to do ones with honey and olive oil (which can be tricky to get out unless you use baking powder) it depends on your hair type. There are loads and loads of recipes! (I’m such a weirdo about this- even my mum thinks it’s odd 😉 )

        1. Nel Post author

I don’t think it’s odd at all! It’s probably better for your hair overall. I use olive oil hair gel but I never thought to make it myself. And I looooove honey. Now I’m thinking I should try this one day, lol.

          1. theorangutanlibrarian

Ah that’s good!! I think my hair’s definitely improved from it 🙂 And olive oil is great!! Ahh me too- that’s the only trouble- the ingredients make me so hungry!!!
