Can You Hear Them?

Mixing it up today since my two previous posts were a little heavy. I want to lighthearted today and talk about music. Have you ever listened to a song and was drawn in not only by the main singer but also the backup vocalist(s)? It has recently come to my attention that a song I’ve listened to at least 10 times features a backup singer and I didn’t even realize it til I listened closely! Most songs that have an underlying singer included is usually listed as “Jack ft. Jill” and then you know Jill is in the song. However, there are a few songs that don’t say that even though Jill is still in the background and I wanted to share a couple that I’ve noticed to see if you hear them as well.

First, I want to start by saying, there are a lot of songs that feature the artists themselves as the background harmonics. Basically the recorded the song in three different tones of their own voice and then merged them together to create the song. An example of this is the song Miss You by Beyonce:

If you don’t want to listen to the whole song, skip ahead to 0:52, this is when you start to hear the harmony of her own making.

Now, the next couple songs I share are not the same person doing their own vocals for the song. These feature artists who are credited on album track lists in the tiny print but not credited at the forefront because most people don’t even hear them or they do and just assume its like a choir or, like above, the singer channeling a different note themselves. My first example comes from artist Jessie Ware and her song Say You Love Me:

Again, if you don’t want to listen to the whole thing, skip ahead to 0:40 because that’s when the background vocals kick in. The voice behind those vocals is actually Ed Sheeran. So of course I’ve heard this a million times and didn’t hear it but once you hear it, you can’t unhear it and it actually makes the song even better for me because I’m an Ed Sheeran fan.

Here’s another one by Phil Collins called True Colors:

At 0:40 the background vocals kick in and for all intents and purposes, it sounds like a different vocal range of Phil Collins himself. It’s not til you get further along into the song that you realize, that’s someone else. He’s not listed and he’s not in the music video but the background vocalist for this song is actually Babyface.

In this next one, the background vocalist is quite obviously different from the main singer, Amy Lee. However, I was so drawn in by his vocal harmony that I wanted to know who the singer was. There’s a lot of conflicting answers on the web because it is a member of the group but the question is which one. The song is Anywhere by Evanescence:

Some people say it’s Ben Moody. Other’s say it’s David Hodges. I don’t know but his voice is beautiful. Let me know in the comments if you’ve hears this and know.

Lastly, I wanted to share an acapella video because what better way to hear a variety of vocal tones then to listen to a song with simply voices and no instruments? I’ve heard the studio version of this next song many times and I always thought I had the voices pegged out for each part. However, recently I found out I was wrong and the one who usually beatboxes or has his voice overpowered by the others actually stands out more than I ever imagined until I saw this live performance. The song here is Run to You by Pentatonix (PTX):

For the first 2 and a half minutes, it’s all of them in harmony but once you  hit 2:48, this is where things get interesting. Kevin, who is the last guy on the right, is usually drowned out by the other 4 in mostly all song because again, he normally beatboxes instead of sings but in this one his voice stands out like a siren and it gives me chills because I always thought it was one of the other ones who broke off at that part to sing with Kiersty and he was just background humming or something. Gives me goosebumps, man.

I know this is a lot of videos and if you listen to all of them, you’re pretty fantastic. Have you ever noticed a background vocalist that you thought was just the artist but turned out to be someone else? Share your examples in the comments below and let me know what if you like any of these songs/artists.

Love to Love

I was thinking about what to write today. You ever just stare at this blank slate and say what can/should I write today? Since today is Valentine’s Day in America, I figured it should be something related to that somehow. My husband and I have been together for 10 years and we never really make it a point to celebrate Valentine’s Day every year. Sometimes he’ll surprise me like a few years ago he took me to this super duper fancy restaurant and I got to eat bolognese. If you’ve never had it, oh my freaking goodness. I had it for the first time in Italy and it’s amazing. I was thinking of maybe recreating it over the weekend because I found an easy to follow recipe to make it but my mother is coming in to see me and we’re going to see Black Panther Saturday night and I need at least 6 hours to make this sauce so I don’t know. We’ll see.

Most of the time we just say Happy Valentine’s Day and I love you to each other and keep it moving. It got me thinking about how often I tell people I love them. I know some people just use it as a phrase to show excitement because maybe a friend helped them have an epiphany but I honestly believe that I use it the way it was intended no matter who I’m saying it to. Saying “I like you” would just be weird to me or it just doesn’t emphasize my feelings enough? Obviously the love I have for my husband is on a completely different level than the love I have for friends or family but when I tell someone I love them, I mean it as in I care about your well being, what’s going on in your life every single day, what’s making you happy or sad (so I can be happy with you or fix it) and other things along those lines.

See how I go from blank to words? I truly even didn’t plan on that random, kind of philosophicalness to spew out but there it is. I really only planned to share a song today that is called Valentine cause there’s not many songs with the word “valentine” in the title. I can think of two off the top of my head. I’m sure you all have heard the song “My Funny Valentine” in a zillion different versions but have you heard the song “Valentine”? I’m sharing the throwback Pentatonix version because I love them and the melody and harmony of this song is so beautiful. I’ll also share the lyrics as well:

I will be friendly
(Please don’t be…)
My soul came to be terrified
(…so terrified)
Please don’t be so shy
So will you never be my lover or my valentine
Never be a friend of mine
Never see my better side
Maybe you’d be terrified
Of all the secrets you were wishing you won’t ever find
‘Cause deep inside me
And I don’t wanna hide me
‘Cause I know about my love
‘Cause I know about my love
‘Cause I know about my love
‘Cause I know about my love
Yeah, pick it fast like a flight far away from here (fly away)
Before I know I feel at home whenever you are near
Live my life, you better cold cut to this
I wish you’d hold me open just to see your vision clear
‘Cause I know about my love (‘Cause I know about my love)
‘Cause I know about my love (‘Cause I know about my love)
‘Cause I know about my love (‘Cause I know about my love)
‘Cause I know about my love (‘Cause I know about my love)
‘Cause I know about my love
‘Cause I know about my love
About my love
About my love
About my love
I will be friendly
(Please don’t be)
My soul came to be terrified
(so terrified)
Please don’t be so shy
That’s all I got for today. Happy Valentine’s Day beautiful people! If you have Valentine’s day stuff planned I hope they make you smile hugely and if you don’t, here is me sending you a virtual chocolate heart that will hopefully make you smile with the rest of us today.

The Playlist Shuffle Tag

I was so graciously tagged by Claire at Brizzlelass Books for this fun award! If you haven’t checked out her blog yet, you should. She’s an avid book blogger who is very engaging with her audience and a cool person. 🙂 So here’s the thing. I have amassed quite an MP3 collection over the years in my Google Play music account and I used to put it on shuffle while driving to and from work. But then my husband bought Tidal and now I just listen to whole albums or NPR on the way to work and Pandora at work. So I went into said Google Play account and hit the shuffle button to see what happens. Here are the rules and following those are my songs chosen by a robot.

The Rules

  • Put your music on shuffle and list the first 15 songs to play (no cheating).
  • Tag 10 others to do it as well.

Beyonce – End of Time

I am a Beyonce fan. Mostly of her newer stuff from the album 4 and newer. Her songs are so upbeat! This was actually my “omg we were just pronounced married!” walk back down the aisle song. I know its called something else but the name is eluding me at this moment.

The Sleeping – Don’t Hold Back

I am not ashamed to admit that I learned this song from playing Guitar Hero 3 back in the day. I didn’t have much of a rock background before guitar playing video games so this is a time that I thank video games for expanding my horizons.

Void of a Legend – Triptyq (Antoniette Costa and Kevin “K.O.” Olusola

If you like acapella, cello and beatboxing combined, you’ll love this track!

Killswitch Engage – My Curse

Guitar Hero 3 and you had to unlock a certain amount of levels in order to be able to play this song! (Also, the main singer is a black man, whaaat!)

Sia – One Million Bullets

I adore Sia. She is so underrated.

Michael Jackson – Remember the Time

If you have not seen this video, you should watch it. Just once! And then imagine me doing the same dances the “Egyptians” are doing because everytime I hear this song I get up and I mostly do them, hahaha. I mean it’s MJ! You can’t not dance when you hear MJ.

Donna Burke – Kaze No Ne

So this apparently came off of a Final Fantasy video game but I learned about it from a random CD mix a friend used to send me back in the day and I love this woman’s voice.

Tracy Chapman – Fast Car

Classic. So many covers of this song on singing competitions.

Gorillaz – Kids With Guns

I mean it doesn’t get any more varied than Gorillaz

Rush – YYZ

Guitar Hero 2….. Hey! I went from not having any hand eye coordination to playing on expert! And yes, we played Rock Band too and still do on occasion if you were wondering.

I hope you all enjoyed this as much as I did cause man it’s been a while since I’ve done that. We’re lucky we didn’t get some Disney tunes this round cause trust me I have a least two Disney soundtracks in that shuffle 😉 . Now I’m thinking of listening on my way home and see what else I have in there! Isn’t it so cool how many songs you have memorized? I feel like if my entire schooling and work career were taught using song, I’d be a genius.

Oh yeah! Tagging people! Umm….

I’m lazy. If you feel like doing this tag go for it! Link me back. I would love to know your musical tastes!

Have you heard anything off my list? If you haven’t and deigned to listen to a couple tracks, did you like what you heard? Let me know in the comments below!

My Feels

These types of videos always pluck at my tender emotions. I watched this video the other day and then made my friend watch the video and she made a great point. In comparison to what this girl has gone through and what she’s accomplished since, makes all my perceived problems pale in comparison. It also gives you this huge sense of strength. With enough determination and passion, anything can be achieved.

FEEL FREE TO CRY UGLY TEARS! I sure did! But it was worth it for my smile at the end.

Finest Fusion

I’m in a music kind of mode these past few days! Last night my friend shared a link of musical greatness. When someone shares a musical link to me, I try to listen and watch without reading the description because I want to have my feelings before I read what everyone, including the author, has to say about it.

The video features Joss Stone in Armenia doing a collaboration with Gata Band in their little basement studio. I was quite mesmerized. I don’t understand the lyrics because I don’t speak the language but that doesn’t even matter! Here’s the video:

I watched it once and then turned around and watched it again. Then I noticed that there’s about 30+ more of these collaborations on YouTube and each one is set in a different country. Before I catapulted myself into an hours long YouTube spiral, I did a bit of research.

Turns out Joss Stone is doing a World Tour. For those of you that don’t know who she is, she’s a young soulful, raspy musical artist who has sang with some of the greats like Patti LaBelle and James Brown. She’s also a huge humanitarian and environmentalist and has accomplished so much for someone in her late 20s!

Back to her world tour. It’s not just any world tour. It’s a Total World Tour! This woman is travelling the entire world and has made it her mission to perform in every country on this planet. She started in 2014 and is still going! What I love about this so much is not only is she performing her own music but she’s infusing herself in the local musical crowd and doing collaborations with the indigenous peoples! She speaks to them, learns the meaning behind their song, learns the song itself and then sings it with them! Talk about really understanding one’s roots! Her audience can be as small as these 4 people in a studio basement to as huge as an arena full of thousands! This barefoot queen is a goddess and she is a role model for the ages!

Can I please be Joss Stone when I grow up??

Check out this collaboration as well as her other ones here.

Better than the Original

Ever listen to a song and get goosebumps or maybe you tear up a little bit?

This song does that for me every time. The harmony, the beauty, there are not enough words to describe how much this song resonates. I found out later that this is the cover and the original is by Katy Perry. Sorry Katy, they blew you away at your own song!

Just give it one listen. If it doesn’t give you brain shivers, you aren’t human.

This is their message to viewers:

As music artists we are given an incredible platform with which to reach the world. One of the most inspiring and rewarding aspects of our job is the ability to make a difference in people’s lives. In keeping with the spirit of why we pursued our dreams as music artists, and the positive impact we aspired to have on others, we decided to make this video with some of our closest friends in celebration of the LGBTQ+ community and all of our fans who love unconditionally and see no barriers. For anyone who has ever felt pride in who they are, and for anyone who has ever doubted the power of your own uniqueness, this video is for you. It warms our hearts to finally be able to share this with you!!
