Anniversary

Long time ago back in like 2004ish? (I can’t remember specifics), Nel was a young kid getting excited for high school. Because of certain neighborhood events that occurred, my mother decided she wanted to move away. Since this move was happening right around school starting and my mom didn’t like the ratings of the school district in the area we were moving to, she decided to homeschool me and my sister. I don’t know if the school still exists but it was my first venture into the world wide web. There was a homework help chat room a lot of us would frequent and not talk about homework.[...]

Things People Do

Before I get into the awesome eclipse pic share, I want to discuss thoughts I have about the things that people do for money. If you’ve been following this corner of the internet for a while, you know I do endangered posts every Thursday featuring animals and sometimes plants that are endanger of extinction in the hopes of spreading more awareness.

Every morning on the way to work, I listen to NPR. This is my main source of news and I prefer it that way because NPR is pretty unbiased and does not take sides in the always revolving debate of politics, religion, and everything else under the sun that occurs on this planet. This morning while I was listening to the latest about this and that, a reporter recounted a story I just find unbelievable. Late last year, China announced it was banning the trade of ivory in the entire country. We all rejoiced because that essentially kills the need for poachers to continue going after elephants for their tusks or conservationists in collaboration with vets going out and cutting off elephants tusks to prevent them from dying at the hands of poachers. Hooray right? That’s a huge step back in the race against extinction right?[...]

Excitement

I’m so excited!! This week is going to be so fantastic! I have a story I really want to share but I can’t until at least Wednesday. Make sure you check back in two days. Today, what I’m really excited about is that there is going to be a total solar eclipse! I’m lucky enough to live in the United States which has a path of totality mapped out. I’m also quite excited to be in a state that’s close to said path of totality. It will only be a partial solar eclipse but it’s 80% coverage and that’s still something to be excited about considering I don’t remember ever seeing one in my life![...]

Growing Self Award

I recently decided not to post on the weekends because I’m so behind on my Goodreads challenge I figured I’d be able to devote more time to reading if I cut back on my posting. I still interact and read all of your posts, I just don’t post any of my own. I’ve been nominated for quite a few awards over the past few weeks. I’m also behind on those and I want to say I apologize for that and admit that I’m probably not going to catch up on them if they aren’t book related (please don’t hate me).[...]

Duck Song

I’m pretty much drawing a blank today. All I’m trying to not think about is how the world is turning into one big ball of hate and depression from events in America to Sierra Leone. So, instead of talking about those things, and making it worse (cause my opinions aren’t nice), I’m going to share this video that makes me laugh like a maniac because laughter is the best medicine.[...]

Skills Set

I was thinking about what I wanted to write about today and I keep thinking about my skills sets. My husband and I watched this episode of Black Mirror last night. The premise of the episode was that all humans are rated on a five star scale; kind of like when you leave a restaurant or book review. Each person you encountered was rated based on the experience you had with them. The higher your rating the more you could get in life. For example, the main character was looking to move into this prestigious housing complex but in order to pay a discounted price, her star rating had to be 4.5 and above. At the time, her rating was only a 4.2 so she would go around the neighborhood interacting in a friendly way with people in order to get a boost in her ratings. She would also post happy go lucky pictures on her feed to get people to give her more 5 star ratings.[...]

Eye Candy

I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to write about today but thanks to the lovely Peela, I got some inspiration in a round about way during our conversation. You can probably get a little bit of an idea where this post is going based off the title but here we go.

Do you ever watch a show purely based on who’s in it, specifically who’s hot that’s in it? Or do you start watching a show and even if it’s terribad, you continue to watch it because of the eye candy?[...]

Try Before You… Wait What?

I try to take a lunch to work every day. Usually it doesn’t happen because I’m the type who likes to sleep as long as possible before getting out of bed. I have the brush teeth, shower, get dressed routine down in 20 minutes before I have to be out the door to get to work on time. Most days, unless some leftovers are packed form the night before, I’m getting lunch from somewhere.

I work in a very small town so my lunch choices are, unfortunately, very limited. I can go to Panera but we ate it so much at my last job that I don’t want it anymore plus I hate paying $10 for a sandwich. There’s also Subway which I haven’t had in literal years so don’t feel the need to start now and another sub place called Jersey Mike’s. I could go the pizza route but I can eat one slice or two of pizza and then I’m done with pizza for a few months. I could get Mediterranean or Chinese food but that requires me to drive further than I wish.[...]

Ode To This Tree

I love nature. I really do. I love animals and their habitats and humans are evil for destroying them and all that. You all know I love all things nature??

So believe me when I say it breaks my heart that one of these days, this tree is coming down.

Our house was built in 1950. You can tell the whole block used to be a forest because there are trees and tree stumps everywhere. In our yard alone, there are 4 of these beauties. I love trees, I really do. They bring all kinds of wholesome, clean oxygen to our air thanks to all that photosynthesizing they do. They also bring shade from the burning sun. Our house doesn’t have air conditioning (yet) but thanks to these trees, the house stays relatively cool because of the wonderful canopy cover.[...]

By Popular Request/Demand

As you all know, I have an addiction. I freely admit that this addiction will never die and it’s the best kind of addiction one could have. My name is Nel and I’m a bookaholic. That’s right. I live to read. I often stay up way past my bedtime to read. I take my reading responsibility very seriously to the point where I’ve decided not to post on the weekends because I want to focus on catching up on my Goodreads challenge. I’ve committed to reading 100 books this year which is 17 more than I read last year and, because I love torture, I’ve made it so that I can only read books I’ve never read before in an attempt to discover new authors. I’m dedicated![...]
